Our aim is to bring together scholars from different countries for an
interdisciplinary discussion in the field of archaeoastronomy and
ethnoastronomy about the astronomical practices, celestial lore and
world-views of ancient and contemporary folk cultures. Researchers in nearby
fields of research such as the history of astronomy & astrology,
mythology, cosmology and landscape archaeologyare also welcomed.
A round table "Archaeology, Folklore and the Recovery of Past
Astronomies and Cosmologies" is planned. The
purpose of the round table discussion is to propose a critical examination
of the value and limitations of astronomical and cosmological traditions
found in folklore, archaeology, and the historical records used sometimes as
evidence for national or cultural identity. How (or whether) we can
reconstruct past astronomical practices and cosmological knowledge from the
limited evidence we have at hand? Our goal is to frame the problem and
prepare further discussions.
We
propose possible fields of research and interest:
Reflections of
astronomical and cosmological knowledge in the folk culture
Astronomical and
cosmological knowledge in religion, mythology, and literature
Reflections of
astronomical and cosmological knowledge in monuments and landscapes
Landscape archaeology
and archaeoastronomy
Archaeology, Folklore and the Recovery of Past Astronomies and Cosmologies
History of the
constellations
Astronomical and
cosmological iconography
Calendars in artefacts,
folklore and literature
History of astronomy
History of astrology
The protection of
remnants of interest for the history of astronomy: problems and
propositions.
